What time of year is best to go?

Canal boat holidays involve plenty of time in the great outdoors. To get the most out of your trip, it's important to choose the right season for you.

Summer is the obvious choice for a canal boat holiday, when the British weather is at its best- although still typically unpredictable, don't forget! The Waterways are at their busiest during this time which has both good and bad points: Bad, if you'd rather not wait for others to pass through locks and if you don't want to worry about mooring at popular visitor attractions. Good if you want to mingle with others on 'the cut', whether helping each other through locks or engaging in the social life of the canal boater!

Spring, when the weather is beginning to get warm, is a pleasant time to cruise. Daffodils edge the towpaths and nature seems to be at its most vibrant. likewise, it's hard not to be swept away by the poetic sights of autumn; with the golden, red and brown leaves fluttering down around you and the refreshing, crisp air of the countryside. There are occasional canal closures during the winter season, but for the most part it's a peaceful time to take a canal holiday: with morning winter mists and a tranquil atmosphere on even the most popular of cruising routes.

If you do choose to take your canal boat holiday during the colder times of year, there's no need to worry about keeping warm onboard; our canal boats have full central heating and cosy bedding to keep you warm and snug. However, it is important to bring good warm, waterproof clothing (wise at any time of year) - as you steer the boat you'll stand outside at the tiller, and depending on the distances you want to cover this could be for several hours every day. Though you never have too far to travel before you come across a canal-side pub - well equipped for those coming in from the cold, often with roaring fires and a good selection of whiskies to warm you up!
